Subject:Mongolia Pics 5: Ulaan Bataar.
Time:12:01 am

Ulaan Bataar, Ulaanbaatar, Ulan Bator, or UB City (this is what the English-speaking Mongolians like to call it) is the capital of Mongolia. And with over a million people, it contains a third of Mongolia's population. My guess is that it also contains all of the country's paved roads. Although it was founded in 1639, it was a mobile ger town that constantly moved from place to place before it finally settled down in 1778 and got a full-time job and wife. Sukhbaatar Square is Ulaan Bataar's version of Tiananmen Square, except the pro-democracy protest here actually resulted in the end of communism instead of a massacre.

By now you're probably well aware of the fact that the Mongolians fricking love Genghis Khan. He is their Jesus, Elvis, George Washington, Superman, and the Terminator all rolled into one. Nothing proves this more than walking down the aisles of their markets. Virtually every product is named after the guy, from their vodkas to their energy drinks.

Genghis is watching you read this entry.

While I did not get to eat marmot stuffed with hot stones (boodog) or drink fermented mare's milk (airag), I did try horse steak. Disappointingly, it didn't taste strange at all. That bottle of "sos cili" was my best friend during meal times in Mongolia: it basically tastes like ketchup mixed with Tabasco sauce.

Ulaan Bataar began as a city of gers and, centuries later, it still is a city of gers. About half of the people still live in them. It'd be as if half of Toronto was still living in igloos.

One aspect of Mongolia that's very modern is their nightlife. Their two biggest clubs, Mass and Metropolis, are comparable in size, design, and features to the major nightclubs you'd come across in Tokyo, Vegas or London. This is probably due to the fact that 60% of the country is under 30 years old, so Mongolia is one giant Spring Break party. I'm surprised any shit gets done here.

Before it became a city, Ulaan Bataar was a Buddhist monastery; so it made perfect sense to visit one ... and grope each others genitals.
